What is the Hermes HAC Bag?

The HAC is also known as the Haut à Courroies and it means High Belts in French. It was created in the 1800’s and it’s older than the Birkin Bag. The original purpose of the Hermes HAC Bag was to transport riding equipment like saddle and boots.

Émile-Maurice Hermès designed the Hac Bag after the handbags carried by cowboys in Argentina inspired him. The production started in 1892 and became an important piece of the history because the making of the Kelly Bag and the Birkin Bag were based on the details of the HAC.

And that’s why the HAC Bag and the Birking Bag looks so much alike.

These bags including the Sac A Depeches Bag were created based on the HAC Bag, which explains how it impacted the history of Hermes and the world of high fashion.

The HAC Bag and the Birkin Bag are like twins because there are so many parts that are similar. However, the HAC is also known as high handle because the handles are quite tall. Not only that, the shape of the bag is taller too. The top front features the famous cross over flap and the iconic turn lock closure, which is reinforced with a lock and chic tag.

Without a doubt, the HAC Bag is a piece of Hermes’s history. The bag is also not easy to find, because its limited in supply and the demand is as high as the Birkin Bag. The price between the HAC and the Birkin Bag are not that much of a different.

To give you an indication of the size differences between the HAC Bag and the Birkin Bag, we have an image that can compare them next to each other.

The left bag is the HAC 40 Bag while on the right lays the Birkin 40 Bag. The HAC 40 Bag is measured approximately 40 x 40 x 23 (W x H x D) cm while the Birkin 40 Bag is measured 40 x 30 x 21 (W x H x D).

So the conclusion is: both bags are evenly sized in width, but as mentioned previously the HAC Bag is much taller. The depth is also approximately the same.

Comparing the HAC and the Birkin in production level, the HAC Bags are usually produced in bigger sizes. There are also smaller size like below 36, but they are limited.

Another major difference is that the HAC is more like for hand carry due to the size of the handles, making it more preferable as a travel bag.

Both the HAC Bag and the Birkin are spacious and features stunning interior detailing like big compartments, patch pocket and zippered compartment.
